About Seth Pickens

Since June 1, 2009, I have served as the Senior Pastor of Zion Hill Baptist Church in Los Angeles, California.

I realize that even though just about everyone would love to feel closer to God, most of those same people are very turned off by church and church folks. I feel called to create a space where people can be themselves in Christ without compromising the church’s great traditions.

I want people who interact with me to come away feeling encouraged, enlightened, and generally better about themselves that they did before.

I’m a Christian. Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of all that human beings can be and do. There are different types of Christians. For example, many don’t believe in reincarnation, understand tantric sex, appreciate Voudou, or study astrology, but I do.

I also believe everyone has boundless potential to be great. I’m talking Michael Jordan/Oprah/Ben Franklin great–ALL OF US. We live out our greatness more and more as we mature spiritually. I am here to help you (you!) achieve this.

  1. Dear Seth,
Thank you so much for mentioning The Man Who Tapped the Secrets of the Universe in response to my post at the blog I write for (it’s not my blog; i’m a hired hand), dailymantra.com. I very much appreciated everything you had to say and maybe will come up to Harlem to hear you preach the next time I’m in NYC!
    Many thanks,
    Lael Gold
PS: Did you go on to read Walter Russell’s books, like the one on the Iliad? I want to read the book about him and also, perhaps, the books by him. It all sounds fascinating, and I won’t be surprised to stumble upon them on the twenty-five cent shelf soon. Or, of course, I can always shell out for them. Take good care.

  2. Hi Seth,
I’ve noticed that you seem to be (quietly) wishing that you had more readers. I have been lurking around in the blogs-by-ministers world for awhile and I think the way to get readers is to comment on other people’s blogs and leave your website. Then people will read what you have to say and then click through to read more of what you have to say.
What you say is very inspiring and I am sure others would think so to!
    Cheers,
    Serpentgrrl

  3. I was looking around in WordPress.com and found your blog today and I came to appreciate what you have here. I have added you to my Health Blog blogroll and was wondering if you might add me to yours? Either way, thanks for the great experience of visiting your site and hope you enjoy mine. Thanks Jessie

  7. Hello there!
I saw this picture on your website (Luke Skywalker and Yoda). I like it very much:)
Can you tell me what the original source of the picture is?
I know, it’s an picture from the movie “Star Wars: The Impire strikes back”.
I’d like to print a shirt with that, so I need one in a better quality..

    Please contact me via Email.

  8. Seth:

I know this post and sentiment is late. I’ve been on a journey, as you can imagine…

As they say “better late than never”. I am so proud of you. Your blog is terrific. Continue your thoroughly unique way of making people laugh, think and act.I like what you said about being a Christian. I am glad you are courageous enough to admit that you (like me) believe in other things that do not detract at all from your faith and reverence of Jesus Christ. I study astrology, African religions, vodoun, Afro-carribean religions as well. I feel you homie.

You are the best. Come by and comment on my blog…”http://www.cynthiadwilson.blogspot.com sometimes.

    See you at your ordination.

  9. I should say “have studied” and appreciate instead of study now. Currently, I am putting all of my efforts into becoming the best spiritual advisor possible. That may mean becoming a pastor, chaplain or interfaith minister. I am prayerful that god will continue to guide my steps.

  10. Thanks, Cool C. Hope your journey continues to be fruitful. See you soon.

  11. I miss those days at CT. Mr.Green’s class was the best.
God bless you, your family, and your work.

    Take care my friend.

  12. Really, Younus? Other than getting pizza, fries, and a chocolate milk for $1.00, I don’t miss high school. Mr. Green, our physics teacher, was pretty awesome though. Remember that time he did a cartwheel? Thanks a lot for wishing me well. Hope you and yours are fine, too.

  13. Thanks for the twitter tutorial.

    Much love!
