I learned a valuable lesson on a beach in Jamaica nearly 10 years ago….
It was a pretty typical College Spring Break scene. A group of us swam out to two large pontoons connected by a 15 foot long inflatable bridge. The obvious game became to try to cross the soft plastic bridge without falling into the water. Some people made it, some people didn’t.
One girl, about to make the attempt, looked across and said with a huge smile, “I’m not going to make it!” She took three steps on the bridge and sure enough, fell right in.
How many times have we done this to ourselves, and how much has it cost us? The stakes were relatively low for that young woman on vacation. But if you have a defeatist attitude when it comes to minor things, on big things, your attitude (and outcome) will probably be the same.
