My cousin Nikki in Jersey City got me Joel Osteen’s Your Best Life Now Journal for Christmas. It has some passages from the book, some scriptures, some quotes from famous people, and space to write reflections in the direction the book is guiding. I’m 3 days in to the 49 day course and I am enjoying it immensely. The best part so far is that it is an invitation to imagination and optimism.
This journal has me writing out my big, hairy, audacious goals. The kind of things college freshman talk about achieving when they grow up, while workaday adults tell them they can’t. Goals like playing pro sports, writing bestselling books, adopting 7 children, being an astronaut, and succeeding wildly in business.
To paraphrase Ralph Waldo Emerson, just the fact that you can imagine yourself doing a thing is proof that it is at least attainable. Cultivating the belief that greatness and fulfillment are achievable for me is enormously empowering. You’d think I already know that “all things are possible with God,” but it really helps to be reminded.
Think about some of the things you most want out of your life and work. The thought that any and all of them are with in your grasp has to be worth a smile.
He has his share of detractors, but I must say I’m a fan.
